SEO for online stores in Romania is no longer about simply "showing up on Google". It is about being visible when 96% of all searches go through Google (StatCounter, February 2026), winning organic clicks in a market worth EUR 8.1 billion (2025) and building a presence that survives algorithm updates. If you run an online store or are about to launch one, this guide sets out what actually needs doing - with verified figures and no generic advice.
Why SEO matters more than ever for Romanian online stores
Data from the Balkan eCommerce Summit 2026 makes the picture clear: 38.5% of Romanian online stores rely on Google Ads as their main sales channel, while organic SEO drives sales for 30.8%. The difference is cost. Organic traffic does not stop the moment you switch the budget off.
On top of that, 42.3% of online stores have no content budget at all (Balkan eCommerce Summit 2026). Invest in SEO and you are competing against fewer than 60% of the market - a real advantage, not a theoretical one.
And the market is worth the effort: 72.9% of internet users in Romania bought something online in 2024 (National Institute of Statistics, via ARMO). With internet penetration at 94%, the potential audience is enormous.
Mobile-first indexing: Google only looks at the mobile version of your store
This is probably the most important technical point business owners overlook. Since 5 July 2024, Google has completed the move to mobile-first indexing, which means the crawler evaluates only the mobile version of your site when working out where you rank (Google Search Central, official).
If your mobile version has less content, missing images or a different structure from desktop, Google sees an inferior site. The consequence is direct: weaker positions, no matter how good the desktop version looks.
What to check straight away:
- Identical content on mobile and desktop - do not hide text or images on small screens
- Mobile load speed - test in Google PageSpeed Insights with a simulated 4G connection
- Tappable buttons and links - at least 48px high for touch targets
- Viewport set correctly -
meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1" - Responsive images - WebP format, srcset for multiple sizes
The online stores we build at Pronet Design are mobile-first from the first line of code, not retrofitted after the desktop layout is finished. That is the baseline on every project we deliver, not an optional extra.
Core Web Vitals: the exact thresholds you need to hit
Google uses Core Web Vitals as a direct ranking factor. The official thresholds for a "Good" rating (Google Search Central, 2024-2026):
| Metric | "Good" threshold | What it measures | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) | under 2.5 seconds | How long the main visible element takes to load | Usually the hero image or the first product |
| INP (Interaction to Next Paint) | under 200 milliseconds | How quickly the page responds when someone interacts with it | Replaced FID in March 2024 (Google, official) |
| CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) | under 0.1 | How much the page jumps around while loading | Most often caused by images without set dimensions |
One thing worth knowing: Google measures Core Web Vitals at the 75th percentile of real user data (CrUX, the Chrome User Experience Report). It does not matter that the site feels fast on your fibre connection - what counts is how it behaves for 75% of actual visitors, including the ones on 4G or a slow network.
INP is the hardest metric for stores with heavy JavaScript: product filters, sliders, live chat. Every third-party script you add (analytics, remarketing, chat widgets) can block the main thread and push INP up.
On-page SEO for product pages: what works in 2026
Product pages are the heart of an online store from an SEO point of view. These are the non-negotiables:
Titles and meta descriptions
The page title (the title tag) should carry the main keyword, the brand of the product and one differentiator. For example: "DeLonghi EC155 espresso machine - free delivery | StoreName". Meta descriptions do not influence rankings directly, but they influence click-through rate, and click-through rate does matter.
Schema.org Product - the required attributes
Google only shows rich results (prices, stock, reviews straight in the search listing) if you implement Schema.org Product correctly. According to Google Search Central, the required attributes are:
name- always required- At least one of
review,aggregateRatingoroffers - If you use
offers, thepriceattribute becomes required too
Rich results showing price and availability inside Google lift click-through rate noticeably compared with a plain listing. Getting the markup right is one of the highest-return SEO jobs on an online store.
Unique copy on every product page
Manufacturer descriptions pasted in are duplicate content - Google either ignores them or holds the page back. Write your own copy that answers the questions buyers actually ask: who the product is for, what problem it solves, what sets it apart. Even 150 to 200 original words beat 500 copied ones.
Pagination and filters: the technical traps to avoid
Stores with hundreds or thousands of products run into a specific set of technical SEO problems.
Pagination in 2026
Google deprecated the rel=prev and rel=next attributes back in 2019. The recommended approach now is a self-canonical on every paginated page. Page 2 of the "Espresso machines" category points its canonical at itself, not at page 1. A "Load more" button driven by JavaScript is a valid alternative, as long as the content is still reachable without JavaScript so crawlers can see it.
Filter URLs - a major source of duplicate content
Product filters (colour, size, price) generate hundreds of URLs with near-identical content. Three ways to handle it:
- Canonical back to the main category URL for filter combinations nobody searches for
- Noindex on filter URLs that bring no organic traffic of their own
- Indexable filter pages for combinations with genuine search volume (for example "red mens trainers size 42")
Hreflang for stores with more than one version
If you run versions in several languages or for several countries, the hreflang implementation has to be complete: every version lists all the other versions plus x-default (Google, official). A partial implementation is worse than none at all.
Organic click-through rate in 2025-2026: what AI Overviews changed
The GrowthSRC study, covering more than 200,000 keywords, shows a clear shift in how people behave on Google:
| Search position | Average CTR 2024 | Average CTR 2025 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Position 1 | around 28.5% | around 19% | -33% |
| Position 2 | around 20.8% | around 12.6% | -39% |
| Positions 6-10 | around 3-5% | around 4-6.5% | +30% |
The reason is AI Overviews - the AI-written answers Google now places at the top of results. They absorb a share of the clicks that used to go to the first organic listings. Oddly enough, positions 6 to 10 gained: people who scroll past the AI answer tend to be more determined and look at more results.
The practical takeaway: being first is no longer enough. You also need to be inside the AI Overview, which means structured content, direct answers to real questions and figures with a source attached. Those are the GEO principles we set out in our guide to visibility in AI search engines.
Content strategy for an online store: what to write and why
An active blog on an online store is not a luxury - it is a source of organic traffic whose marginal cost drops to nothing over time. But the content has to be planned, not random.
The content types with the biggest SEO payoff
- Buying guides - "How to pick the right home espresso machine" catches people in the research phase, before they decide
- Product comparisons - "Model A vs Model B: which one for [use case]" - clear commercial intent
- How-to articles - they build authority and earn links without you asking
- Answers to common questions - laid out as FAQs, they improve your odds of appearing in AI Overviews and featured snippets
How often to publish
Consistency beats volume. One good article a week does more than ten weak ones a month. Every piece should answer a genuine question a potential customer has, with concrete data and a clear structure.
If you have no one in-house to write, outsourcing to an agency beats publishing nothing. Pronet Design includes content guidance in its online store packages - we do not hand over an empty site and walk away.
Local SEO and Google Business Profile for online stores
Even if you sell nationwide, local SEO matters when you also have a physical location or target a particular region. Google Business Profile is free and feeds directly into local results.
For a pure online store with no physical shop, focus on:
- Category pages tuned for searches with local intent: "trainers online Romania", "living room furniture fast delivery"
- Google reviews - they affect both local rankings and conversion rate, so ask satisfied customers for them
- Consistent name, address and phone number across every platform you are listed on
A technical SEO checklist for your online store
Before you spend on content or link building, make sure the technical foundation is sound. These are the essentials to check:
| Item | How to check it | Priority |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile-first indexing | Google Search Console, Indexing, Pages | Critical |
| Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP, CLS) | PageSpeed Insights or Search Console | Critical |
| Schema.org Product on product pages | Google Rich Results Test | High |
| Canonical tags set correctly | Screaming Frog or Sitebulb | High |
| XML sitemap kept up to date | Search Console, Sitemaps | High |
| Images with alt text | Screaming Frog, Images report | Medium |
| HTTPS active with no mixed content | Browser DevTools console | Critical |
| Server speed (TTFB under 200ms) | GTmetrix or WebPageTest | High |

Link building for online stores: what works in Romania
Backlinks are still an important ranking factor, but quality counts for far more than volume. One link from a relevant news site is worth more than a hundred from low-grade directories.
Approaches that work for Romanian online stores:
- Digital PR - press releases built on original data (your own studies or figures) attract links from news sites without you asking
- Manufacturer partnerships - if you are an authorised distributor, ask to be listed on the manufacturer site
- Content people want to link to - thorough guides, data-led infographics, case studies
- Listings on specialist platforms - GPeC, Trusted.ro, Compari.ro bring visibility and sometimes links
Stay away from paid link schemes and private blog networks. Google spots them, the penalties are severe, and recovery takes months or years.
SEO and Google Ads: how to combine them
This is not an either-or decision. The two work together:
- Google Ads for launches and new products - traffic straight away, but expensive over time
- SEO for categories and products with steady search volume - an investment whose return grows
- Remarketing for people who arrived organically but did not buy
The Balkan eCommerce Summit 2026 data shows stores that combine SEO with Google Ads outperform those relying on one channel alone. The right budget split depends on your niche, your competition and how far along the business is - there is no universal formula.
The platform you build on decides how much SEO work is even possible. If you are still choosing, our guide to open source eCommerce platforms compares the options on technical SEO control, speed and cost.

Frequently asked questions about SEO for online stores
How long before SEO starts producing sales?
The first movements usually show up after three to six months: better positions on long-tail searches, more impressions in Search Console, a slow rise in organic traffic. Competitive commercial keywords take twelve to eighteen months of consistent work. Anyone promising page one in a month is selling you something else.
Do I need an SEO specialist, or can I handle it myself?
The basics are within reach for any business owner: writing honest product descriptions, keeping titles and meta descriptions tidy, compressing images, publishing useful articles. Technical work on site architecture, structured data, Core Web Vitals and link building is where an experienced person pays for themselves.
Is Schema.org Product markup mandatory?
Google indexes your pages perfectly well without it. But without structured data you do not get rich results - the star ratings, prices and availability that show up under a listing and pull the eye. On a product page it is one of the cheapest wins available.
How much have AI Overviews really changed things?
Clicks on the top two positions have dropped by roughly a third since the feature rolled out, and informational searches took the hardest hit. Commercial searches - the ones where somebody is ready to buy - held up far better. That is why the answer is not to abandon SEO but to write pages that are worth citing.
